The braking stroke is short, characterized by quick release and braking action; the brake is heavy and compact; as a hinge, the release dead due to small stroke; due to the hinge between the brake pad and brake arm, the contact between the brake pad and brake wheel is even, and easy to adjust. However, because the short-stroke brake acts quickly, the impact force of the suction force directly acts on the entire braking mechanism, so the screws on the brake are easily loosened, leading to brake failure and reduced operational reliability, requiring frequent inspection; at the same time, due to the short braking stroke and fast action, the crane will cause violent vibration of the bridge under the action of inertia. Short-stroke brakes are mostly used in the running mechanisms of small cranes with smaller lifting weights and elevator running mechanisms.

Compared with disc brakes, drum brakes have the advantage of being able to generate a large braking force with a relatively small force, but their hot water fade resistance, self-adjustment of braking clearance, and stability of braking direction are relatively poor.

The main components include the base plate, brake wheel cylinder, return spring, limit spring, adjuster, brake shoe, and brake drum. When braking force is applied, the brake pedal force is transmitted to the master brake cylinder with the assistance of a vacuum booster. The master cylinder delivers hydraulic pressure to the brake lines and brake hoses. Under the action of hydraulic pressure, the piston of the brake wheel cylinder pushes outward, causing the brake shoe to contact the brake drum. The friction between the brake shoe and the brake drum forces the brake drum to slow down, thereby reducing vehicle speed and bringing the vehicle to a stop. When the braking force is released, the hydraulic pressure in the hydraulic system decreases. Under the action of the return spring, the piston of the brake wheel cylinder returns, and the brake shoe separates from the brake drum, eliminating the friction between the two.
